Full steam ahead for the Hercules Virtual Marathon
Supporting the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway – Kent’s Mainline in Miniature
Race dates: 1st December 2020 – 21st February 2021
The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway faces a major loss of income this year due to the Corona Virus pandemic. This means there are challenging times ahead but... challenges are there to be met head on and the railway intends to do just this.
You can be part of this effort by joining us for the Hercules Virtual Marathon, running for over two months from the beginning of December. All event profits will be donated directly to the Railway to help support their fundraising.
Why Hercules?
One of the most famous steam locomotives to work on the line is Hercules. A British locomotive, built to Henry Greenlys design, Hercules hauled the inaugural train on the line in July 1927 and has been in service ever since. Your reward for completing the Marathon will be a stunning medal featuring the loco.
About the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway
The Railway opened in 1927 and operates between Hythe and Dungeness on the Kent Coast – a distance of 13.5 miles. Your marathon distance is, therefore, equivalent to a return journey on the railway.
Why not book a journey to enjoy the distance in comfort and admire the world’s smallest public railway?
How does the Hercules Virtual Marathon work?
Once signed up, we will send you a step by step guide on how to take part, it couldn’t be easier! You can walk or run the 27 miles on your own or within socially distanced small groups. The distance can be completed indoors or outdoors and either in one session or divided into smaller sessions.
You can also help the appeal by fundraising via the Just Giving page where you can also upload your efforts via Strava for your supporters to see
Involve the whole family
You can walk or run the distance as a family, combining your distances, and we have special Family tickets available.
The Railway is really keen to encourage everyone – whatever their age or ability - to get out and support the railway.
Whilst we can’t promise the crowds to spur you on and the excitement of race day competition, we can however recreate the sense of running community and challenge in our unique results platform and selfie gallery.
So, why not sign up, lace up and it's ‘all aboard’!!
