The Die Hard Challenge

Races Dates – 16th May to 30th May 2021


The NEW Die Hard Challenge is our second race in partnership with The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment of the British Army, following the enormous success of the Tigers Virtual 10k.

The phrase die hard was first used during the Battle of Albuera (16th May 1811) in the Peninsular War. During the battle, Lieutenant Colonel Inglis of the 57th Foot was severely wounded during the resistance. Inglis lay on the ground, refusing to be moved to the rear, calling to his soldiers ‘Die Hard, 57th.’ The regiment acquired the nickname of ‘The Diehards’. The depot of the Middlesex Regiment, of which the 57th became the 1st Battalion, was named Inglis Barracks. ‘Albuera’ was engraved on the cap badges of the Middlesex Regiment.

Although considered a victory for the British, Portuguese and Spanish, the casualties to the British infantry were disastrous. In one of the bloodiest battles of the war, the British suffered 4,200 casualties out of 6,000 men.

It is this battle in which this virtual challenge takes its inspiration and remembers one of the most significant battles in British Army history.

The Die Hard Challenge

The virtual event starts on the key date of 16th May and to commemorate all those who fought for their country, we launch the Die Hard Challenge.

Your challenge is to complete 57 miles in the two week period from 16th to 30th May. All finishers will earn a bespoke commemorative medal.

You can choose to run, walk, cycle, swim or row, or any combination thereof, just keep going!

Upon entry, we will send you a logbook so that you can keep track of your activities. For the real Die Hard’s could you complete 57 miles in one go?

The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment

The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, known as the Tigers has a Benevolent Fund which was set up to relieve hardship and support veterans as well as serving soldiers in times of dire need. Whilst a relatively new Regiment, the Tigers only formed in 1992 amalgamated from the Queen’s Regiment and Royal Hampshire Regiment. This means that we not only support our younger veterans but also support our venerable older veterans from those regiments and their forebears also. Ranging from veterans who fought in all theatres of WW2, through to the Korean War, the fight against Terrorism in Northern Ireland and up to the life changing injuries inflicted on our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not only physical injuries though, as many of our Tigers suffer from the mental anguish from multiple deployments to many of these theatres - the number of suicides over the last few years is testament to that struggle.  


The PWRR Benevolent Fund

By entering the Die Hard Challenge you are directly supporting those soldiers in their hour of need. The PWRR is a registered charity (No. 1024418) and their work ensures that members of the Regiment, forebear Regiments and their families have access to support and advice to guide them through difficult times, relieving hardship and distress. Examples range from help with purchasing a mobility scooter which allowed an WW2 veteran to leave his flat through to renovating a house to allow a young veteran amputee and his family to live a full life. By taking part in this challenge, you will be making an impact on the lives of our National heroes.

What is a virtual race?
This is a virtual race, which means you can take part anywhere in the world, in your own time and at your own pace. This also includes treadmill runs/walks.
How do I take part?
It's easy to take part, once you have booked you will receive a step-by-step guide.

Simply enter the virtual event and NiceWork will send you a welcome email with details of how you submit your results. Over the course of the month, capture your runs / walks on your favourite tracking device and complete the log book and email it to them along with your epic finishers selfie and we will feature you in the selfie gallery! 
If you don’t have an activity tracking device you can still take part, just email your finishing time to and you will still get your medal.

Please enter me for this virtual challenge. I accept that the organiser will not be liable for any loss, damage, action, claim, cost or expenses which may arise in the consequence of my participation. I declare that I will not take part unless I am in good health and accept that I do so at my own risk. Once my entry is accepted, I understand that my entry fee is NOT REFUNDABLE under any circumstances - even if I do not or cannot complete the challenge. Throughout the challenge I will observe the current government guidelines in force with regards to social distancing and time restrictions on exercising outside of the home.
