Sunday May 3rd 2015

Distance 63 miles

A donation from every entry will be made to the Alzheimer’s Society

Regarded as one of the UK’s top cycling climbs, Great Dun Fell is the sting in the tale of this unique cycle sportive. Starting in the historic market town of Appleby the route undulates through the beautiful Eden Valley and skirts the edge of the Lake District before arriving at the foot of the final 5 mile ascent.

The event sold out in 2014 and whilst the 2015 field has been increased to accommodate 300 riders, early entry is advised.

“This is the greatest climb in England, this is our Mont Ventoux, it has no peers, there is no comparison: Great Dun Fell is simply unique….”

Article from The Guardian by Simon Warren

Event HQ

The event will start at Appleby Sport Centre, just a half mile from the A66 by-pass. The centre is at the rear of Appleby Grammar School.

Parking at the school/sports centre is free. Arrive early and follow the instructions of the marshals. If full participants will be directed into the town centre, only a few hundred metres away where further free parking is available.

What is a Cycle Sportive?

A sportive is a non-competitive challenge ride. It is not a race and all roads will be open to the public so cyclists must obey the Highway Code. The aim is to negotiate the course as comfortably and safely as possible. Cyclists will start in small groups at set intervals so as to enable the field to spread out. Although not a race all finishers will get a finish time on completion of the route.

What do I do on event day?

Registration will open from 0730 where you will pick up your number, the event will be hand timed.

Cyclists will be set off from 0800 (in groups of 12 or so at 2 minute intervals). Less experienced/slower riders are advised to set off nearer to 0800. The last starters will be at 0900.
