Welcome to the Horwich Festival of Racing which over the past 16 years has grown to become one of the most popular sporting events in the North of England. This unique event attracts competitors not only from the local areas but all over the United Kingdom and from abroad.
Originally known as Horwich Carnival Races, the event was re-named to reflect the wide variety of sporting activities which take place on closed roads in the centre of Horwich.
The Festival has a strong heritage as a proving ground for competitors who have gone on to success on the Olympic and world stages including local hero Jason Kenny, Laura Trott, Lizzie Armistead and Dame Sarah Storey.
Over the years, the event has staged the British Cycling Elite Mens and Womens Circuit Championships, British Para-cycling Circuit Championships, British Masters 5K national championships for running and walking, Penny Farthing road racing, Sprint Orienteering, Unicycle National Championship.
A Triathlon was introduced in 2015 and the organisers are always looking to increase the number of Sports. A Fun/Swim Run is also included for children 8 to 14 years of age using the Leisure Centre baths and running in Station Park.
There are many events which cater for young children to grandparents to participate, fun runs, one lap cycle ride, school teams and generally to get young people interested in sport.
The event has always been supported by Horwich Town Council and Bolton Council. In 2016 Bolton Council increased its financial involvement in the races which has led to the event being increased to two days instead of the normal one day.
President of the Festival, Barbara Ronson, said: “I am thrilled that we are able to run events on the Saturday as well this year. It’s a great opportunity for youngsters to take part and it will draw many more people into the town.”
Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris, added: “Since it began in 2002, Horwich Festival of Racing has grown to become one of the most popular sporting events in the North West and we’re really pleased to be supporting it.
“Investing in sports at a grassroots level is key to encouraging all ages - especially young people - to get involved in sport and improve their fitness and overall health.”
In the week leading up to the races weekend there are events ie Running Mini Tour, Trail and Fell races and Cycle Hill Climb.
The organisers appreciate all the support which they receive from all our sponsors, some of whom have been involved since 2002.
