Q. What about participation for transgender/non-binary athletes, in light of UK Athletics/England Athletics' new transgender policy?
A. Since 31st March 2023, UK Athletics (the national governing body for our sport) has ruled that transgender women may no longer compete in the female/women category in races at all levels, and should instead compete in the male/men category (i.e., their sex at birth). This is in line with an earlier ruling by World Athletics. As our race is insured and licensed by UK Athletics, we are officially bound by their rules of competition, especially as regards prize-giving. However, as an LGBTQ+ running club, we fully understand the distress a transgender athlete may feel in having to compete in a category in line with their sex at birth rather than their gender identity. We also realise the rule may act as a deterrent against taking part in running altogether, which goes against our club's general ethos of inclusion. Since the ruling in spring 2023, we have been working with other Frontrunner groups in the UK affiliated with England Athletics (the chapter of UK Athletics for England) to try to find the best and most impactful way to influence England Athletics to reverse their decision, and we have begun consultation with England Athletics through a partner university in a project to bring about wider policy changes. This year, we have included an “open” category (selectable as “other/not disclosed” when entering), and we plan to award prizes within this category, as with the men and women categories. We would therefore suggest that transgender women athletes who feel uncomfortable entering as male should select the “open” category when entering our race. Non-binary athletes may also wish to sign up to this category. While we fully understand that some transgender athletes may still feel uncomfortable about taking part in this category, we feel that it is the most pragmatic course of action while we navigate these new rules while still being as inclusive as possible.
Q. Is the event suitable for runners who want to do it with buggies or dogs?
A. Unfortunately, the course is not suitable for either as has a number of hills and narrow paths in places
Q. Will there be a medal?
A. No, we are being as green as possible so there will not be a medal and we are asking people to opt in to having a T shirt to save waste.
