Q. What time does the event start?
A. The gun fires at 10:00 (Full event schedule in the overview)
Q. What do I need to bring?
A. Your own food/drink supplies. Your own shelter (tents/gazebos etc). Your own seating arrangements (camp chairs etc).
Q. How many people are running?
A. We have restricted this event to 200 participants due to demand.
Q. Where can I park?
A. Tockington Manor have a large carpark on their grounds and overflow parking is available if needed.
Q. Will I get lost on the route?
A. There will be marshals and signage wherever possible to ensure no one gets lost.
Q. How can I guarantee where my tent goes?
A. The earlier you arrive, the better location within the athlete base you can set up camp. (8:00 earliest arrival)
Q. How long is the race?
A. The race is 30 hours / 30 loops in total which is 201km in distance. If anyone remains after the 30 hours, there will be a Shot Gun Finish.
Q. How does a backyard ultra work?
A. Runners must start a 4.167 mile loop every hour on the hour. If you don't finish the loop before the next one starts, you're out and DNF.
Q. What happens if I don't start the next loop?
A. You're disqualified.
Q. Can I run or walk the loops?
A. Yes, as long as you make it back before the next loop starts, strategize anyway you want.
Q. What's the best way to hydrate and fuel?
A. Eat real food early, switch the quick calories later on. Hydrate steadily throughout the day. Rest when you come back to base camp.
Q. What gear do I need?
A. Chair, tent?, spare clothes, lights, head torch (if running into the night), layers of clothing, easy to eat food.
Q. Can I have a crew with me?
A. Yes, you can have crew/friends/supporters with you for as long as you want.
Q. Is it safe to do if I've never ran an ultra before?
A. Yes, some first timers use a backyard ultras as their first ultra due to the short distance between base camp and the furthest point of the run.
Q. How should I prepare/ train?
A. Focus on easy long distance mileage. Attempt some runs using the format for the event i.e. 4.167 miles per hour and rest in between. This will help you get a feel for how the event will go.
