When Faith first joined her school running group in rural Kenya, she was the only girl with proper sports shoes. Many of her teammates ran barefoot, some even in flip flops – the only “school shoes” they had. Faith had to stop midway through a race due to blisters and bleeding feet. But thanks to the generosity of runners like you, she received a donated pair of blue trainers from the UK. With them, she didn’t just run – she soared.
Those second-hand trainers – once forgotten – became her ticket to physical safety, faster running, and something even more powerful: confidence, dignity, and a sense of self-worth. Faith went on to win the county trials.
One Woman at a Time is a UK-registered charity working in Kenya and Nigeria to protect girls from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), forced marriage, and domestic violence. Through safe refuge, education, mentoring and community outreach, the charity helps girls rewrite their futures and achieve lasting independence.
The charity’s founder, Jean Anderson, works directly with girls and women on the ground, helping them access education, safe housing, and the emotional support they need to thrive. Girls like Gertrude – who, with mentoring and guidance – became a qualified nurse. These women go on to support others in their communities, creating a ripple effect of change.
⚠️ Please note: The following video discusses topics including FGM which some viewers may find distressing.
If you have a pair of gently used women’s trainers (especially sizes UK 5, 6 or 7), you can make a difference. The girls supported by this charity often have no suitable footwear to participate safely in school activities, running groups, or even walk long distances to class.
We are currently accepting clean, lightly worn women’s running shoes. Your donation will go directly to girls in need.
You're also invited to join the Morecambe Cross Bay Walk – a charity fundraising event in support of One Woman at a Time.
Funds raised help the charity empower girls fleeing dangerous situations by supporting their education, safety, and independence.
