In a departure from the course used for the past two years, the 2019 race will start and finish in the Batts riverside park area. The race is all on roads apart from a very short section on grass in the Batts. Runners pass the spectacular River Swale Waterfalls before crossing the river at Green Bridge and climbing Sleegill. A quick look back over the shoulder from Sleegill offers fine views of the castle. Runners follow a short circuit round Catterick Garrison then return into Richmond, where they circle Richmond Castle on Castle Walk before enjoying a fast downhill finish into the Batts park area below the castle.
The new route for the 2019 Richmond Castle 10k cuts out the loop round Smutts Road, off Richmond Road (north), on the way back into the centre of Richmond. (Past competitors with long memories should note that the route no longer enters either Smutts Road or French Road.) This more direct return to the town centre allows for an attractive – and downhill – run round Castle Walk at the end of the route, followed by a quick downhill finish into the Batts.
Unfortunately, while English Heritage was prepared to continue to allow us the use of Richmond Castle for our event, the costs involved have proven insupportable for our small running club. We hope competitors will appreciate that savings made by relocating the race finish will be reflected in sustained competitive pricing of entries for what is certainly one of the country's most testing 10k road races, and we are pleased to announce that entries will be the same price in 2019 as they were in 2018! Runners will now also enjoy the convenience of starting and finishing in the same scenic location – the attractive Batts riverside park area, immediately below Richmond Castle and next to the River Swale Waterfalls.
As in previous years, Race HQ, for number collection and registration, is in Richmond Town Hall (approximately 50m uphill from the Market Hall), and refreshments are always available from the cafe in the Market Hall.
All finishers receive a commemorative item.

In the opinion of the organiser, the nature of the course makes this race unsuitable for wheelchair athletes.
