Highlights From The London Marathon

The London Marathon brings some unique sights for the thousands of spectators who make their way to the capital or tune in at home. Fancy dress runners have always upped the ante each year to provide us with laughs, and the top athletes have always pushed boundaries, producing record breaking finish times year on year.

Here are a few things you may have missed from the 2018 London marathon:

Katherine Switzer

You may not know the name, but you’ll remember the iconic image of the first woman attempting to take part in the Boston Marathon, only to be dragged from the race by male organisers. 50 years on from this tragedy, Switzer, now at the age of 71, was guest of honour at The London Marathon. She even ran the race in the same number – 261 – that she ran in all those years ago. This time, no one was holding her back.

Mighty Mo

Mo Farah finished third at the London Marathon, setting a new British record time of 2:06.22. His race was not without controversy though; when attempting to grab some water, race volunteers were too pre-occupied with trying to capture photos of the former Olympic Gold medallist to assist with the drinks, costing him valuable time. Credit to the man – he still broke the record.

Hottest London Marathon on Record

The Met office confirmed that Sundays race peaked at a high of 23.2°C. This is officially the hottest London Marathon to date. These challenging conditions lead to a high-pressure day for paramedics and volunteers who had to deal with a record number of collapsing runners.

Let us know what you thought about this weekend’s running events, maybe you participated in the London Marathon or took part in another race?
