Keeping up with the different types of races that are launched each year can be hard work. There are now a huge selection of varying distances and discipline combinations that we aren’t too far away from literally having a different race for each runner.
To help you understand all the types of ‘athlons’ that you can find out there, we’ve compiled a handy go-to guide:
Triathlon
The most famous Athlon event has to be the Triathlon. This race encompasses swimming, cycling and running back-to-back and generally in that order. Distances vary with each triathlon, but they allow a mix of disciplines to keep things exciting and to really push the limits on endurance.
Ironman Triathlon
The Ironman Triathlon, also known as the long-distance triathlon race, is an extended version of the traditional triathlon. The distances for an ironman are usually set at a 2.4 mile (3.86km) swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2km) bike ride, all culminating in a 26.2 mile (42.195km) marathon. These extreme distances are only taken on by the most hardcore competitors.
Triple Triathlon
If one triathlon isn’t enough for you, triple triathlon events are held around the world to allow people the chance to push their endurance to the absolute limits. These races consist of a regular swim/cycle/run triathlon performed three times over the course of a day.
Duathlon
In locations where swimming is unavailable a duathlon event has competitors take part in a running stage, then a cycling stage, before ending with a second running stage.
Pentathlon
A pentathlon race consists of five events in all. The events are epee fencing, pistol shooting, 200m freestyle swimming, a show jumping course on horseback and a cross-country run.
Biathlon
Although this generally refers to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, they can also take place in other climates by simply combining two disciplines.
